02/15/09 The Scotland Yard like weather conditions continue to linger around but despite the cool air temps and the fog, the water temps remain prime for Permit. We ran deep into the back country and managed to find a fogless patch of water, smooth, crystal clear and very fishy looking, We saw life right off the start while poling the flat, rays, sharks...all the signs that point towards good future action. We caught a 25 lb cuda to get the skunk from the boat and a few minutes later we had our 1st shot at Permit but it got spooked by a shark prior to getting a cast out. 30 minutes later I spotted a single tail pop up in deeper water, followed by another, and before we knew it we had ourselves a floating island of 30+ permit sunning just below the water surface. Not only were there Permit, but an influx of Tarpon also came to join the party. As we silently approached the school of Permit we took our 1st shot and no sooner did the crab hit the water and we were hooked up, not with a permit but with a monster size Jack that stole the bait from the Permit. 10 minutes later we had the 12 lb brute of a Jack boat side. Incredibly the exact scenario played itself out 6 more times before the action subsided. We fished these schools of Permit for over an hour and just could not get passed the Jacks.
